One Source, Seven Southern States
For companies seeking to expand or relocate into the Southern Auto Corridor, there’s no better source of assistance than TVA Economic Development. TVA’s theme—One Source, Seven States—says it all. Its coverage of a seven-state area is a distinct advantage, providing a one-stop shop for access to an 80,000-square-mile area that covers almost all of Tennessee and parts of six surrounding states.
But geographic coverage isn’t by any means TVA’s sole advantage. Its wide array of services is detailed at www.TVAed.com. TVA’s Megasites Program, for example, features industry-ready sites suitable for large automotive manufacturing plants. Currently, five sites have met the stringent criteria set by McCallum Sweeney Consulting, an independent firm that certifies the megasites. Officials of steel manufacturer SeverCorr, which has purchased the first megasite for construction of an $800 million steel mill, have called the Megasites Program “the gold standard” for large industrial projects today. Eddie Lehner, CFO of SeverCorr, which will locate near Columbus, Mississippi, said the megasite’s availability was critical in convincing investors of the location’s viability. “Because so much of the groundwork had been done by an independent consulting firm, that job was much easier,” he said. Qualifying such a large site for investors would ordinarily take 12 to 18 months, but in SeverCorr’s case the process was completed in six.
Another distinct TVA advantage is TVAsites.com, a comprehensive building and land database that is the world’s largest Geographic Information System application for site selection. The web-based service features 1,700 sites for lease or sale and offers extensive economic, geographic, and demographic information and mapping capabilities.
TVA also offers various financial programs to support local economic development. Through its targeted funds, TVA has loaned millions of dollars and leveraged billions to help industries expand and grow. It offers extensive assistance to help established companies remain viable and grow, and it encourages new business growth through an incubator program and other services. TVA works actively with local and regional economic development partners to promote the benefits of the region’s central location, highly educated workforce, well-developed transportation infrastructure, and business-friendly climate and quality of life.
